Abu Walid/Mustafa Hamid renews his Links to Taliban follow on post
By Leah Farrall, Australia
This post will deal with what the new articles say and there will be a third follow on post outlining the potential implications I see arising from Hamid’s renewed dealings with the Taliban
First, it is now clear these articles and his writing for the Taliban have been in the works for some time. In the preface of his most recent book, which contained the guidance I wrote about Hamid said he was writing because the gun has fallen from his hand accidentally and that he is unable to take it back. Here he is referring to his detention in Iran. He wrote that because he can not fight with the gun he is going to instead fight with the pen.
What had me fascinated at the time was that he also wrote that he was writing quickly because he felt time was limited in front of him. He also wrote that a candle gives more light at the end, which I presume this is a reference to his age and his recognition that there will not be another opportunity for him to join the mujahideen before he meets his maker. Although, a few people have queried his intermediary about Hamid’s health because of these comments and the response has been that he is healthy so this is probably just a general turn of reference to explain his forthcoming writing blitz and any interruptions to his writing caused I guess by more stringent detention etc. Although it is possible he is ill. I initially thought he was ill when he wrote all is coming soon, but now that his publications for the Taliban have come to light, I see that this was what he meant by this turn of phrase. His writing style while often frank can also be quite esoteric at times so I have taken this into account when trying to deduce what he is saying.
The next observation is that his articles in the Taliban magazine are remarkably similar in parts to the original book containing the guidance and he draws upon some of that material, as I guess many authors do.
I want to highlight some things Hamid says from these new articles before moving to an analysis of what this may all mean and the consequences of his renewed ties with the Taliban.
A renewed Media campaign
The first thing that struck me was Hamid’s guidance to the Mujahideen to up the ante in their media work. He writes that they are still in dispute with it and do not realise the seriousness of media images and their impact. He argues that a camera taken with a unit into battle is just as effective as a rocket launcher. Here he is noting something I and others have observed about some shortfalls in the types of combat footage and master tapes that have characterised media releases lately. Al Qaeda has certainly dropped the ball on this and the Taliban relies very heavily on statements, which do not have the same impact as videos.
Given that this article is appearing in an official Taliban publication, which implies official approval it would not surprise me to see a renewed media offensive.
More instruction in relation to his kidnapping guidance
Then of course there is his renewed guidance for the Taliban to take prisoners. He notes that taking prisoners will put public pressure on the US administration and cause them and their allies domestic and international embarrassment.
One thing that stands out for me is the change of tense in his recommendations about kidnapping. In his book, it was released as guidance and encouragement. In this newer article he uses the term “until now”, which intimates that this strategy is now being actively considered by the mujahideen, if not already being actively pursued.
He reinforces the need for the Taliban’s leadership to give the mujahideen instructions to pay more attention to the issue of obtaining hostages, rather than war booty or weapons, which is what they apparently tend to focus on doing. He also writes again about the taking of bodies as well and this can also be leveraged in the mujahideen’s favour. In his book he wrote about the effectiveness of this strategy by Hezbollah and other groups with Israeli soldiers. Indeed this is where his idea has stemmed from, after the taking of a US soldier hostage in Afghanistan in July of this year inspired him to recommend this strategy.
He also argues that taking soldiers has a longer term strategic benefit for the mujahideen than the taking of war booty.
In his second article in the Taliban publication, Hamid focuses on Obama’s wavering with regard to his Afghan policy and how it is doomed to fail.
Hamid also claims that Obama wishes to kill Afghans like his predecessor did. However, he is also acutely aware of the wavering and potential change of US strategy. Hamid clearly senses an opportunity for the Taliban in this. He writes that when the Americans inevitably withdraw the outcome will be better for Afghanistan than after the Soviets because this there is a single organised and unified movement, The Taliban, to come in and take power.
Both articles can be found here. http://www.alsomod.org/index.php/maqalat-40/
Okay so this is the background of the new material and I will discuss the implications in a third post I am compiling.
