Abu Walid al Masri renews his links with the Taliban

Vahid brown has an excellent post out today about how Abu Walid al Masri’s kidnapping guidance (that I wrote about in an op-ed for The Australian last month) has now entered into official Taliban publications.
I completely agree with Vahid’s assessment that this is a somewhat worrying turn of events. Although I’m more inclined to think that this inclusion in the magazine obscures something a little more nefarious than his again taking up a role as Taliban media strategist and propagandist. As I noted in my op-ed piece al Masri and Omar were extremely close with Omar often seeking and receiving his counsel on issues of military and political strategy among other things.
In this respect, I am not at all surprised to read that al Masri’s work has ended up in a Taliban publication. I was waiting for some form of sanction to come to light, as I indicated in my op-ed piece that I believed it would. However, I have dropped the ball on watching for it of late, so I am very glad Vahid caught this and blogged on it. And more generally I am glad that my article has piqued a renewed interest in al Masri, who I believe continues to be an influential figure in Arab Afghan and Taliban circles and whose profile is again on the rise.
I will post more analysis and context in relation to this development in a further post but in the meantime I have a mea culpa to make…
In my piece on al Masri’s guidance on kidnappings in the Australian I carelessly ended up describing his book as an al Qaeda document in my final draft. I don’t know what the hell I was thinking when I changed it from my original I had written earlier. Well clearly I wasn’t thinking when I changed that line. I was trying to make the whole piece less academic and more readable instead of a long winded explanation of where he fits into things. And in the process I screwed up. So a big mea culpa from me because it lionises al Qaeda. So humble pie for me on this, big time, since it is one of the main things I take issue with and here I’ve gone and done it. I hereby give myself a very big public smack.
I also used the term “al Qaeda figure”, when in retrospect I should have said advisor, because I meant “figure” in this context to mean that al Masri advises them, which he still does. Although, I should note this advice has consisted largely of fairly harsh criticism of late (and with good reason – see my post here where I outlined his criticisms of Sheikh Saeed’s al Jazeera interview, derisively entitled “How to declare three wars in thirty minutes”). So that’s my second mistake.
But here’s where it gets interesting. Shortly after I posted my op-ed piece on al Masri’s strategic guidance to the Taliban on my blog, an email I have verified as coming from one of the people who distributes al Masri’s work arrived in my inbox. It suggested that I refer to his other books and told me where I might find them. Of course I already have them all or I wouldn’t have found this most recent edition. Anyway, I of course got curious and took a peak, and a news article (not my op-ed piece) citing what I said was there, with no commentary taking issue with the al Qaeda mistake. By now I’m really curious.
But anyway back to the email, they’d even gone to the trouble of running it through google translation so it came through in English. It was really very polite, which got me curious since as a female, who has her former occupation listed alongside her contact details, it was odd to be receiving this type of letter. There was no mention of my mistake in the email.
The purpose of sending me the links was so that I would write more on him from these other sources and generate more publicity for them I guess. And presumably to get it right next time, though again I note nothing was said to me about my errors in this email. I guess they figured if I didn’t get it right, they could use my future writings to leverage more letters to the editor and other publicity that way, which they have since done.
As it stands though, they are right. Al Masri was not an al Qaeda member as I have noted on many occasions and which is verified in multiple sources. I pointed out in a return email that I did not say he was an al Qaeda member in my article and explained what I said above. I also referenced what his second wife has said about him not being a member. I pointed out that she said he was however still in the thick of it (although often very critically) until the 9/11 attacks when she says he really turned on them, angry that they had wrought the destruction of Afghanistan. This gels with what he says in his books too. We had an interesting back and forth about that. And I note they misrepresented what I do now too in their letter to the editor, saying I continued to work in intelligence. So there you have it mistakes all round. In the case of my mistakes, rather than go back and change the posts where I haven’t made my mistakes sufficiently clear I figured I might as well eat humble pie for dinner tonight and address it here instead. Mmm it’s yummy that humble pie.
Anyway, the reason for the long-winded account is that from this whole interlude it has become clear that that has been a massive intensification of efforts to delineate al Masri from al Qaeda in very recent times and more importantly a publicity campaign launched to do so (witness the email I received and letters to the editors of Arabic media).
This begs the rather obvious questions of why now and for what purpose? I confess I am fascinated to find out more and will put a post up shortly as to what I think is happening and why and the very important implications I think this may have.
